THE URBAN VOID
Project type: Urban streetscape design
Role : Case study, design, sketching, 3D modelling
This project was part of Urban project competition entry. It required identification of an urban crack within the city, and to develop it into a usable space.
I chose a space which was wastefully used to be upcycled and revamped into a public seating/ small community space.
*The niche before being revamped
REFURBISHMENT PLAN
Food cart
Tire planter
Free-standing tire seating
Baluster parapet
Niche turned into a seating kiosk
Seating area
Play area
PRESENT SITE CONDITION
OPEN DUMPING AREA LEADING TO FLEA BREEDING
NON-PERMITTED VEHICULAR PARKING
UNORGANIZED ACTIVITIES
MATERIAL UPCYCLING
Unused scrap tires - releases harmful fumes on burning; injurious to health and environment
Clean tires painted in vibrant colours and used for planting and seating
Using tires in open spaces can lead to accumulation of water in the tube which can cause unhygienic conditions.
Cutting out a slit at the base of the tire to drain the collected water and keeping the insides dry
The corridor is about 35 feet long and 10 feet wide. This strip is divided into -

Food cart area (for food hawkers)
Open seating
Play area
Open plantations
COVERED SEATING
Apart from seating, light weight tires cover the seating area. The tires are closely tied together to form a mesh. Wind chimes were added to create phonetically pleasing experience.
The tires decoratively covered with climbers and vines, mimicking the surrounding greens.
PROCESS
Painting walls with murals in bright and vibrant colours to liven up the space
Adding plants and tire seating, and tire roof.
I added scrap wall lamps for rustic aesthetics and balusters to restrict vehicular access.
Metal frames in bright paint
Use of unused lamps as lighting elements
